Current Situation

The future of the children of these villages does not depend on emergency food and used clothing. The future of these children and the nation depends on education. Only a good education will ensure the children’s future as responsible citizens. The program will enable students to become knowledgeable of their civil rights and responsibilities, develop an appreciation for the dignity of labor, and an understanding of their moral and ethical responsibilities in society.
Dr. and Mrs. Melvin J. Mason, 2007

According to UNESCO, the illiteracy rate in Liberia is 80%. Ye Sumo Village is located about 10 miles in the rural neglected part of the City of Arthington called Back Bush. The illiteracy rate in Back Bush is over 95%! The unemployment rate is almost 100%. Due to the brutal 14-year Liberia Civil War (1989-2003) in which about 500,000 men, women and children lost their lives, the rudimentary schools in Back Bush were totally destroyed.
