Background

The Ye Sumo Public School, built with private donations, opened in Back Bush on November 10, 2007.  Dr. Joseph Korto, Minister of  Education, represented President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf at the dedication and official Turn-Over Ceremony. The school building has five classrooms, a principal’s office, teachers’ lounge, and storage room.  The Minister  of Education has assigned a principal, three classroom teachers, and an agriculture teacher to the school. Over $1,000 worth of educational materials and supplies purchased in the United States with funds provided by donors were  delivered to the school in November.

The building is electrified, and a generator was borrowed and used on the opening day to demonstrate how functional the building can be by  providing: a comfortable teaching and learning environment, suitable studying place at night, adequate space  for adult literacy at night,  and other community developmental activities, when a generator is purchased.

There are 14 villages within a 3-mile radius of Ye Sumo Village.
The school is the educational center for the entire area, serving 147 students (see Table 1) and immediately impacting an entire generation and the surrounding area educationally, socially, and economically.
